35 34 HKUST Annual Report 2020-2021 BEST-IN-CLASS OPERATIONS LANDMARK CAMPUS DEVELOPMENT Set to open in November 2021 to coincide with HKUST’s annual Congregation and the start of the University’s 30th anniversary celebrations, the much-anticipated Shaw Auditorium reached its final stages of construction, with structural and building services work completed and progress made in the fit out and external landscaping. The design of the Martin Ka Shing Lee Innovation Building also progressed. This major structure is due to provide space for dry laboratories and project rooms as well as a large maker-space for prototypes to be constructed and tested, among other uses. In addition, it will form a critical hub for the southern end of the campus, with a bridge link and footpaths providing greater connectivity between different buildings. On-site work is expected to start in the year ahead. Projects handed over during 2020-21 included several specialist research laboratories, both on campus and as part of the InnoHK scheme at the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park. The first phase of the remodeled Senior Staff Quarters completed and residents moved in, with the second phase of the project now underway. The University put in place key administrators to spearhead institutional performance and development, and advanced campus facilities to support future achievements, while keeping health and safety of the campus community a priority On-site work commenced on the Jockey Club i-Village, which provides 1,551 bed spaces for students. Once completed, the hostel will connect with the Lee Shau Kee Business Building at roof level and provide a step-free route to the HKUST Jockey Club Institute for Advanced Study (IAS). Meanwhile, the proposed Life and Chemical Sciences and Technologies Building gained initial approval by the government, enabling design work to start. The building will provide best-in-class research laboratories adjacent to IAS. BEST-IN- CLASS OPERATIONS NEW VICE-PRESIDENTS DRIVE FORWARD DEVELOPMENT Two Vice-Presidents were appointed over the year to take forward the University’s external relations and internal administrative development respectively. Prof. WANG Yang, a world-renowned mathematician with extensive academic and administrative experience, took up the position of Vice-President for Institutional Advancement starting October 1, 2020, to advance the University’s visibility and strategic partnerships, and champion HKUST innovations. Prof. PONG Ting-Chuen, a founding faculty member of the University who has served in many senior administrative roles at the University and externally, was appointed Vice-President for Administration and Business, effective July 1, 2021. Prof. Pong oversees planning and management of administrative resources at HKUST in support of academic and research endeavors.
