47 46 HKUST Annual Report 2020-2021 2020 More than 600 participants from 55 universities in 13 countries and regions participated in the online Conference on Industrial and Applied Mathematics. The conference provided a forum on the latest advances in the field. The Inaugural Conference of the Association for Chinese Animation Studies was held online from March to May 2021. Over 70 speakers from 32 countries and regions were invited to give lectures, covering topics related to Chinese animation and live action, animation research and education, among others. HKUST presented A Night at the Opera in col laborat ion wi th the Ist i tuto I tal iano di Cul tura Hong Kong as part of the Universityʼs new Cosmopolis Festival. The “Shaw Auditorium: Spark of Inspiration” Exhibition was launched in the University Atrium to familiarize HKUST students, faculty, staff, and alumni with the landmark venue, opening on campus later in 2021. A virtual interactive tour was also made available. The University co-organized the first Summer Institute in Computational Social Science to be held in Hong Kong. The world-renowned summer school, originated by Princeton and Duke Universities, drew 90 applications and admitted 17 mostly graduate students from Hong Kong, the Mainland, the US, and Australia. EVENT HIGHLIGHTS 2020-21 The University held a virtual Congregation for the f irst time, conferring 2,405 bachelor’s degrees, 2,860 master’s degrees and 285 doctoral degrees, bringing HKUST’s alumni network to 89,819. Dr. ZHANG Yunfei, Founder and President of Zhuhai Yunzhou Inte l l igence Techno l ogy Ltd., China’s first unmanned surface vehicles company, shared his insights on innovation and entrepreneurship at a webinar. The event was part of the HKUST Entrepreneurship Fireside Chat Series. Dr. Zhang is an HKUST PhD graduate. JUL AUG SEP OCT NOV DEC JAN Hong Kong-based leaders in green finance shared valuable observations and understanding in a webinar focused on Mobilizing Capital for the Brown to Green Transition, co-organized by HKUST Business School, Division of Environment and Sustainability and Institute for the Environment. FEB MAR APR MAY JUN The inaugural HKUST Virtual Information Day took place for prospective students, parents, and teachers. Activities included admissions talks and interactive live student sharing, virtual booths for all departments, individualized admissions consultations, and a 360-degree virtual campus tour, among others. A joint webinar was held with the University of Chicago on how to “Thrive Amidst Disruptions: Role of Fintech Post COVID-19”, as part of a joint effort to share ideas and promote international partnership. The virtual hackathon Hack Viral! brought together students and professionals to explore what technology could do to solve issues stemming from the pandemic in youth deve l opment and educat i on , travel, and the well-being of vulnerable communities. The University conferred Honorary Doctorates and Honorary Fellowships on 10 distinguished individuals from Hong Kong and around the world in HKUST’s first virtual presentation ceremony for these recognitions. 2021 EVENT HIGHLIGHTS 2020-21
