48 Awards and Recognitions Faculty members and students have received numerous honors and accolades over the year. The following list is not exhaustive. FACULTY • IAS Si Yuan Prof. Gunther UHLMANN , Chair Professor, Department of Mathematics, and IAS Senior Visiting Fellow Prof. John HARDY were awarded Honorary Doctorates by the University of Helsinki, Finland, in recognition of their academic achievements in philosophy and medicine respectively. • IAS Sin Wai Kin Professor of Chinese Culture Prof. YAN Lianke , Chair Professor, Division of Humanities, was named one of the 12 Inaugural Royal Society of Literature International Writers, becoming the first Chinese writer to receive this honor. • Prof. BAO Zhigang , Department of Mathematics, received a 2021 Hong Kong Mathematical Society Young Scholar Award. • Prof. LU Haipeng , Department of Chemistry, was selected by the Royal Society of Chemistry’s journal Nanoscale as an Emerging Investigator. • Prof. CHAU Ying , Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, was named Leading Woman in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) at the American Chamber of Commerce’s Women of Influence Awards 2021. • Prof. Rhea LEIM , Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, received the University Grants Committee Teaching Award 2021 for Early Career Faculty Members. • Prof. Charles W. W. NG , Chair Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, was honored with a 2020 State Natural Science Award (Second Class) from the State Council for research into a state- dependent constitutive framework for unsaturated soils, and its applications. • Prof. YAN Xiong , Department of Finance, won the Rising Scholar Award from the Review of Corporate Finance Studies journal. • Four faculty members received 2021 National Natural Science Foundation of China Excellent Young Scientist Awards (Hong Kong and Macau): Prof. SUN Fei , Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Prof. ZHANG Jingdi , Department of Physics, Prof. JIN Tianling , Department of Mathematics, and Prof. WANG Zhe , Division of Environment and Sustainability. FELLOWS AND BOARD MEMBERSHIPS • Prof. JO Gyu-Boong , Department of Physics, became an awardee of the 2021/22 Research Grants Council Fellow Scheme. • Prof. LING Shiqing , Department of Mathematics, was named a Fellow of the Journal of Econometrics 2021. • Prof. YU Jianzhen , Department of Chemistry and Division of Environment and Sustainability, was appointed a Fellow of the Asian Aerosol Research Assembly. • Prof. Pascale FUNG , Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, was elected a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence. • Prof. Larry LI and Prof. YU Hongyu , Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, were elected Fellows of the Royal Aeronautical Society. • Prof. Andrew POON , Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, was elected an Optica Fellow. • Prof. CHEN Songnian , Chair Professor, Department of Economics, was named a Senior Research Fellow 2021-22 by the Research Grants Council. • Prof. Albert PARK , Chair Professor, Department of Economics, was appointed the Asian Development Bank’s Chief Economist. • Dean of the School of Business and Management Prof. TAM Kar-Yan was reappointed Chairperson of the Curriculum Development Council by the HKSAR Education Bureau and appointed Chairman of the Hong Kong Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation (HKCPEC). • Prof. David CHANG Cheng , Division of Humanities, was named the 2021-22 Harvard-Yenching Institute Visiting Scholar and Radcliffe Fellow.
