HKUST Annual Report 2022-2023

HKUST annual report 2022-2023 HIGHLIGHTS of the Year  Healthy Aging Boost through Innovative Polymer Technologies Prof. CHAU Ying (Chemical and Biological Engineering) (second left) and her team developed innovative polymer technologies to address three chronic conditions prevalent among the elderly: dry eye disease, macular degeneration, and knee osteoarthritis. Their pioneering work received a Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury at the 48th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva. Insights on Flood Preparedness from High-Resolution Rainstorm Database Prof. LU Mengqian (Civil and Environmental Engineering) and her team developed a database of mesoscale convective systems (MCS) to analyze heavy rainstorms and flood risks in eastern China. The database enables fresh insights for flash flood preparedness, adaptive measures, and weather simulations in the region. Analyzing Market Sentiment with AI Prof. Allen HUANG (Accounting) (left) and Prof. YANG Yi (Information Systems, Business Statistics and Operations Management) developed FinSent, a free web portal that uses financial sentiment analysis to track sentiment in financial reports and earnings calls of listed companies in the US and Hong Kong. FinSent offers investors a new perspective beyond financial information. Early Risk Forecasting for Alzheimer’s Disease Researchers led by President Nancy Y. IP (center, front row), in collaboration with Chair Professor and Director of the HKUST Big Data Institute Prof. CHEN Lei (second left, front row), developed an AI-based model that uses genetic information to predict an individual’s risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease well before symptoms occur.
