> $400B Economic Impact 15 Empowering Students & Faculty Technology Cultivating a Thriving Start-Up Ecosystem HKUST's Industry Engagement Day in November 2022 showcased over 30 inventions, attracting investors, industry players, academics, government officials, and entrepreneurs. In May 2023, the University’s first Unicorn Day brought back almost 100 home-grown innovators and drew around 600 guests from various industries and government agencies. Embracing Generative AI The popularization of generative AI through the release of ChatGPT in November 2022 opened up a new world of opportunities and challenges for many sectors of society, including education. Amid the debate about its use in teaching and learning, HKUST became the first university in Hong Kong to embrace the new technology and recognize its potential to transform education. Supporting Student Well-Being To support students in navigating challenges, close to 5,000 personal counseling sessions and special education needs (SEN) consultations were conducted over the year. Further promoting SEN- awareness, the University’s SENtastic Staff Week and Award Ceremony helped to develop faculty and staff members’ awareness of inclusive practices.
