HKUST annual report 2022-2023 LEARNING for Life Gaining a Head Start on Career Options University advisors and alumni held a record 1,900 career consultations in 2022-23, and at the same time extended our service provision to prepare students for employment. HKUST pioneered a Hong Kong-first career support program on design thinking to help students prepare for challenges in the workplace and find their ways to professional and personal fulfilments. We also launched a pilot “Ask Me Anything” chat series for faculty-student advising. About 50 alumni across various industries offered career guidance to current students in one-on-one sessions. Our students’ interest in early work experience was evident in the high participation in the government- supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) internship scheme, attracting a In August 2022, the University co-hosted a two-week summer program in collaboration with Bai Xian Asia Institute, a non-profit dedicated to promoting cross- cultural education. The program engaged around 50 Asian Future Leaders Scholarship awardees from over 10 Asian countries and regions, including those from HKUST and seven partner universities, to explore artificial intelligence applications and discuss issues in East Asia under the theme of “The Age of Disruptive Innovation”. To assist needy students, a total of HK$7.6 million in bursaries and loans was provided to those facing financial constraints or unforeseen emergencies. A work-study program was introduced, offering on- campus internship opportunities with aid provided on a dollar-to-dollar matching basis. The program had extended around HK$300,000 in financial support by June 2023. There was also a notable increase in financial support for students with difficulties in seeking mental healthcare. 1,900 Career Consultations in 2022-23
