Alongside, the Express Licensing Platform is now providing an online marketplace to promote HKUST software to start-ups and industry partners, considerably shortening the licensing process for such technologies. Driving Innovations Across Borders Beyond Hong Kong, our several mainland platforms have been advancing the University’s research and knowledge transfer efforts, helping expand the footprint of our inventions. Over 2022-23, the University’s Blue Bay Incubator in Shenzhen incubated 37 companies, taking the cumulative total to 147. Such achievement indicated the effectiveness of HKUST’s entrepreneurial ecosystem and its important role in generating Greater Bay Area innovation. Among the start-ups founded in the past year, 10 were valued at more than RMB100 million. A total of 150 IP rights applications were made. HKUST Shenzhen Research Institute, a key mainland platform for the development of Shenzhen and Hong Kong, received three Natural Science Awards for its leading-edge discoveries, including one Second Class Guangdong Province Natural Science Award and two Second Class Shenzhen Natural Science Awards. Adding to the University’s presence in the Greater Bay Area, HKUST Shenzhen-Hong Kong Collaborative Innovation Research Institute received approval in July 2022 to become a supporting institution from Guangdong Basic and Applied Basic Research Foundation Support Organization. 226 Inventions Disclosures Received 345 IP Filed 288 Granted 85 New IP Utilized 533 /1,603 Patents Owned by HKUST’s Clear Water Bay Campus Being Utilized (33%) In April 2023, HKUST made its first i n s t i t u t i ona l appea r an c e a t t he International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva with 19 University teams pa r t i c i pa t i ng and c o l l e c t i ng 20 awards. Projects on display ranged from Alzheimer’s disease assessment, advanced polymer-based therapeutics for chronic disease, to metal 3D printing for manufacturing. Accolades included one Prize of the Chinese Delegation for Invention and Innovation, and three gold medals with congratulations of the jury.
