HKUST annual report 2022-2023 In a transformative year for the University, we have expanded our footprint in the Greater Bay Area with the official opening of HKUST(GZ), and deepened our international partnerships through contributions to alliances and thought leadership platforms. LOCAL to Global Mainland Footprint Opening of HKUST(GZ) Marks New Era The University celebrated a milestone in its history with the official opening of HKUST(GZ) in Nansha, Guangzhou, on September 1, 2022. It signified the start of the “HKUST 2.0” era under the pioneering “Unified HKUST, Complementary Campuses” framework, with the two campuses working in concord to deepen collaboration in the Mainland and advance education, research, and knowledge transfer in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and beyond. Since the Ministry of Education approved the establishment of HKUST(GZ) in June 2022, the campus has been on a fast track for growth. Within just a year, it has secured over 100 government-funded research projects across various fields, spanning advanced materials, microelectronics, smart manufacturing, bioscience, biomedical engineering, among others. Industry partnerships are flourishing too, with over 70 alliances forged with top-tier enterprises and research institutions. These include a plan to establish a metaverse laboratory with China Mobile Group Guangzhou Branch, and a GBA green computing hub with China Telecom’s Guangdong branch. In June 2023, HKUST and HKUST(GZ) powered up academia-industry synergy through HKUST(GZ) INNOTECH Day on our Guangzhou campus. The cross-campus initiative drew over 100 start-ups and innovation teams, as well as prospective investors, paving the way for research from both campuses to be commercialized in the GBA. Deepening Government and Academia Engagement From our home base in Hong Kong, we have been strengthening our ties with mainland government bodies and academic collaborators. Through hosting diverse delegations, coordinating visits, and organizing high- level events, we bolster our connections which enable us to better contribute to the growth and progress of the GBA and the country as a whole.
