HKUST Annual Report 2023-2024
33 HKUST Annual Report 2023-2024 AI Model Reduces Global Ammonia Emissions by 38% A research team led by Prof. Jimmy FUNG (Environment and Sustainability) developed an AI model to reduce global ammonia emissions from cropland by 38%. The model uses machine learning to optimize fertilizer management without compromising nitrogen use. This breakthrough supports the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals by addressing air and water po l l u t i on , and c l ima t e change , particularly from major crops like rice, wheat, and maize. Emissions Tools to Drive Forward Sustainability Reporting in Hong Kong Environmental researchers at HKUST have developed a cutting-edge calculator and estimator to facilitate sustainability reporting in Hong Kong. The publicly available tools empower organizations, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, to determine their own scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions; and enable financial institutions to gauge the GHG footprint of their investees or borrowers, even when underlying company data is limited. The project was conducted in collaboration with the Securities and Futures Commission.
