Fun learning activities were also arranged with different community partners to spur science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) skills. Events included the inclusive HKUST Underwater Robot Competition, organized under the HSBC/HKUST Robotics for Youths Programme, the Robot Explorer Cup, held together with the Bank of China, and the 2023 HKUST-ExxonMobil spider robot challenge, involving more than 530 students and teachers in total. Adding to Understanding Through Creativity and Cultural Heritage To foster cohesion and interaction in and with the wider community, the University raised awareness of cultural heritage and history through a range of memorable activities. In the China in Maps: 500 Years of Evolving Images exhibition, which opened at the Lee Shau Kee Library in October 2023, the campus community and public were able to explore the role of historical maps and the cultural perspectives they presented. In December 2023, a symposium brought together scholars from across the globe to discuss East Asia maps drawn by Chinese, Korean, and European mapmakers between 1300 and 1800. A series of open talks related to the symposium was also organized. Meanwhile, the University’s South China Research Center strengthened awareness of regional roots and traditions among tertiary and secondary school students and the public through numerous workshops and field trips. Events included Tai O dragon boat water parade paddling, local traditional ritual music, and participation in the joint university docent training and heritage services program in Yim Tin Tsai, Sai Kung.
