168 World’s Top 2% Scientists HKUST academics named 27 L A B T O M A R K E T A STRATEGIC HUB FOR GLOBAL ACADEMIC TALENT In addition to project funding, the University prioritizes the recruitment and retention of faculty with strong research vision and expertise to advance innovation. This commitment is reinforced by several strategic initiatives launched in 2024, including the introduction of a Targeted Hiring Scheme, the extension of the retirement age for Chair Professors to 70, and the adoption of fractional appointments for senior academics. These measures build upon the ongoing “30 for 30” Strategic Hiring Campaign initiated in 2022. By late June 2025, the University had recruited nearly 160 new faculty members from leading global institutions since 2022. This cohort includes distinguished researchers, experienced academic leaders, and professionals with industry backgrounds. Their expertise strengthens strategic fields such as biomedical science and translational medicine, artificial intelligence, microelectronics, business management, sustainability, and arts technology. Looking ahead, the University will continue to align its research focus with key national priorities, including those outlined in the 14th Five-Year Plan, such as quantum information, integrated circuits, new materials, brain sciences, gene and biotechnology, future energy, and space-earth exploration.
