56 HKUST ANNUAL REPORT 2024-25 Water, Landscape and Biodiversity Since 2023, the “Living Lab” Smart Water Network project has enhanced the University’s efforts to reduce water loss through innovative technology that detects leaks in underground pipes. The pioneering initiative has now been adopted by the Government of the HKSAR’s Drainage Services Department, Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, and Hong Kong International Airport. To enrich the campus landscape, the Campus Management Office has introduced vibrant, colorful plants to create a warmer and more welcoming atmosphere. The Butterfly Garden has also taken shape, featuring pathways constructed from recycled materials, nectar-rich plants, and essential host plants for butterfly larval. These efforts have helped establish the University as a habitat for 100 butterfly species, supporting local biodiversity. Landfill Waste 46% Recyclables Collected 890% * 2014-15 as baseline
